Enterprise SaaS Provider

Commercial | Atlassian Data Center to GitLab Migration

Background

The client is an enterprise SaaS provider delivering cloud software to finance and revenue operations teams at large organizations. As a cloud-native company shipping continuously to a live customer base, its engineering organization operates on a fast release cadence with little tolerance for tooling disruption.

The Need

The client’s development workflow was split across Atlassian Data Center products, with Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket each handling a separate slice of the software lifecycle. The fragmentation was increasingly at odds with the pace the business required. Engineers moved between systems to connect a work item to its documentation and its code, traceability was assembled manually, and each Data Center product carried its own hosting and administrative cost.

The client wanted to consolidate onto a single platform, but the migration had to happen without interrupting an active release schedule. Any approach requiring an extended freeze on development was not viable.

What We Did

GitSimple designed and executed a migration sequenced around the client’s release cadence:

  • Assessed the existing Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket footprint and identified dependencies between them
  • Built a migration plan sequenced to avoid conflicts with active release windows, minimizing disruption to in-flight development
  • Migrated repositories, issue history, and documentation into GitLab with history and integrity preserved
  • Consolidated CI/CD onto GitLab pipelines as part of the transition rather than as a later phase
  • Validated each stage and supported teams through the workflow transition

The Result

The client now runs planning, documentation, source control, and CI/CD on a single platform. Work items link directly to the code and pipelines that implement them, removing the manual effort previously required to establish traceability. Retiring the Atlassian Data Center footprint simplified administration and eliminated the overhead of maintaining three separate systems. The migration was completed without a disruptive halt to the client’s release schedule.
