Background

The client is a global provider of embedded software for safety-critical and mission-critical systems, with products deployed across aerospace, defense, industrial, and communications markets. Its engineering organization is distributed across multiple sites and had built up a large, mature toolchain over many years of product development.

The Need

The client operated substantial Atlassian Data Center deployments across Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket, supporting a large engineering population. Running three separate systems created meaningful administrative overhead and fragmented traceability. Planning lived in one tool, documentation in another, and source code in a third, with no native linkage between them. Each system carried its own infrastructure footprint, upgrade cycle, and administrative burden.

Consolidating onto a single DevSecOps platform offered a clear path to simplification, but the scale and history of the existing data made migration a genuine risk. Years of issue history, documentation, repository history, and layered permission structures all had to survive the move intact, and the engineering organization could not afford an extended disruption.

What We Did

GitSimple planned and executed a phased migration from Atlassian Data Center to GitLab:

  • Conducted a full assessment and inventory of existing Jira projects, Confluence spaces, and Bitbucket repositories
  • Mapped existing workflows, permission models, and project structures to their GitLab equivalents, identifying gaps requiring design decisions rather than direct translation
  • Executed the migration in phases, preserving issue history, documentation, and repository integrity throughout
  • Validated and reconciled data after each phase before proceeding to the next
  • Provided post-migration support and enablement to help teams adapt to consolidated workflows

The Result

The client consolidated three separately administered systems into a single platform. Planning, documentation, source control, and CI/CD now live together, giving engineering teams traceability from requirement through deployment without manual cross-referencing between tools. Administrative overhead dropped with the retirement of the legacy Data Center footprint, and processes that previously spanned three systems were simplified into one. The client reported a high level of satisfaction with both the migration outcome and the execution.
